Location Chamonix is very well known for its excellent quality of guaranteed snow cover (90% of the skiing domains are over 2000m in altitude) until the beginning of May: an exceptional vertical drop at the Grands Montets, an unforgettable descent of the Vallee Blanche as well as vast ski areas for beginners. A paradise for non-skiers too: Discover the Mer de Glace by the Montenvers rack and pinion train, or the stunning panorama of the Geant glacier from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi (the highest cable car in Europe). Open all year round, Chamonix is a town of over 10,000 permanent inhabitants and made up of several hamlets dotted along the valley floor. The town centre has kept its incomparable traditional atmosphere. Ski Facts Many of the original ski lifts and jumps from the 1924 Olympics remain in operation today. The skiing area is said to be the most remarkable in the Haute Savoie. You?ll find some of the most challenging skiing in the world combining length, gradient and beautiful mountain scenery. For example La Vallée Blanche - descends 2,770m from the Aiguille du Midi down into Chamonix, (this run demands a guide as it is essentially off-piste and has many hidden dangers). Chamonix is also an excellent area for intermediates. The skiing spreads over five main areas linked by shuttle services or gondolas: Les Houches, La Tour, Argentière, La Flégère and Le Brévent, The Mont Blanc lift pass gives access to all these areas With the exception of Les Houches, it also covers the resorts of Mègeve and Courmayeur (Italy). The best areas for beginners are Le Brévent and the gentle slopes of La Tour and Planards. Chamonix has easy access from nearby towns so it attracts day-trippers. Consequently, during school holidays and at week ends there may be queues at the lifts.
