| Central America
We have defined Central America as the eight countries situated on the isthmus joining North and South America, including Mexico. Although Mexico is politically part of North America, we have chosen to define the region on geological grounds. Comprising several thousand miles of both Pacific and Caribbean coastline (including the longest barrier reef in the Northern hemisphere), Central America certainly isn't short of beach and island resorts.
Glamorous hotels, quiet inns, exotic locations, romantic hideaways, watersports, cruises; the entire range is yours to choose from. Think Acapulco, Mazatlan, Cancun, Nosara, Balboa...
If however, you think this is everything Central America has to offer, think again. Inland, away from the surf and sand, Central America is an exciting land of deserts, mountains, lakelands and active volcanoes, with a wealth of attractions for every kind of traveller.
There are dense jungles and tropical forests (much of which have protected status) teeming with rare species of flora and fauna and often hiding ancient ruins of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. Visiting these ruins is not just for the seasoned adventurer - there are often organized tours of the more accessible sites - and there are many good museum exhibitions to see in towns and cities.
Ecotourism is also big here, so seeing some of the natural wonders of this part of the world doesn't have to involve a major expedition. Fishing, hiking, horseriding, mountainbiking and whitewater-rafting are just some of the other entertainments for those who like the great outdoors.
Those who wish to get out and about around town will be pleased to know that, apart from sightseeing and shopping, South American cities are lively places with plenty to offer in the way of nightlife.
