Although easily accessed through the forested mountains the Pousada still retains the welcoming atmosphere of an isolated retreat. It provides a good central location for exploring the area and the nearby towns of Amarante and Vila Real. Amarante is an ancient town, which has developed at a crossing of the river Tamega. Dominating the town and looking down regally on the river is the convent and church of Sao Goncalo. Vila real 23 kms away is a small prosperous town which produces the famous mateus rose wine. The country home of the count of villa real is open to the public.
