General- golf course 5 kilometres from Pousada, fishing, table games. 08/08 mp.
At almost 1000 metres altitude and surrounded by 13th century castle walls, this Pousada was built from a group of small village houses maintaining their medieval characteristics. Visitors can enjoy an outstanding view from some of the rooms and sitting rooms over the alentejo plain.
They are medium sized. The decoration is quite plain and austere but at the same time this gives them the traditional atmosphere and look of a village house.
At the bright restaurant one can enjoy traditional cuisine, such as bread, egg and coriander soup, roast pork loin with orange sauce, roast lamb with red pepper and for dessert, rich egg and sugar pudding.
It is not spacious and although Spartan in decoration it is quite cosy and welcoming.
Marvao, where this Pousada is located has been considered as a "fortified mountain stronghold" reminiscent of Obidos, but on a smaller scale and not so commercialised. Close to the Spanish border, it has been a fortress since roman times, many artefacts can still be found nearby. The 13th century walls and ramparts remain but with some 17th century modifications.
