This relaxed, friendly resort, with its good range of gentle slopes, is an ideal family destination and is also suited to beginners or second/third time skiers who are hoping to build up confidence. Known as The Friendly Skiing Area, the Wildschonau may not be the largest of areas, but the skiing available is varied and it offers something for all standards of skiers. Although not interconnected, the lift pass covers all lifts in Niederau, Oberau and Auffach. The north facing slopes, Lanerkopfl and Markbachjoch in Niederau, were first developed into ski slopes in 1947, so the Wildschonau has a long skiing history. There are some pleasant runs back through the woods and some challenging dark red to deep black runs, suitable only for experienced skiers. The runs on the Schatzberg in Auffach, the larger Wildschonau ski area, are a little more placid, the terrain is more open and the pistes are wider. Beginners, families and snowboarders feel comfortable here on the sunny skiing-motorways. There is a rather good off piste mogul field and, at a length of 10 kilometres, the red run back to the valley demands good form! In Oberau there are five draglifts, mostly for beginners with one short black run on the Riedl slope. In a recent survey conducted by the ADAC Top Ski Resorts in the Alps Guide, the Wildschonau won first prize in the category Small but Excellent! The following information relates to the entire Wildschonau ski region: Resort altitude: 83
